ANGELS’ NIGHT VOLUNTEER CAMPAIGN

OVERVIEW: The annual Angels’ Night anti-arson campaign is a three-day event, Oct.
29-31, designed by the city of Detroit and sponsored by White Castle to reduce arson
during the Halloween period.  The campaign brings Detroiters together to keep their
neighborhoods safe by patrolling their city streets, turning on their porch lights and
adopting vacant or abandoned buildings.  In years past, the crimes that have occurred
during this period have cost the city millions of dollars in damages and have caused its
citizens to suffer great losses.

WAYS FOR COMMUNITY MEMBERS TO HELP:

THEY SHOULD PATROL THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD: Volunteer teams of two or
more people will be assigned to patrol specific neighborhoods by car from 6 p.m. until
midnight on Oct.  29-31.

WATCH THEIR BLOCKS: Volunteers are encouraged to be alert and report any
unusual or suspicious activities on their block during the three-day Halloween period to
the police by calling 9-1-1.

ADOPT A HOUSE IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD: Volunteers are asked to adopt a
vacant house or commercial building in their neighborhood and watch that building from 6
p.m. until midnight during the three-day Halloween period.

TURN ON THEIR PORCH AND EXTERIOR LIGHTS: All citizens are asked to turn
on their front and back porch lights, and any other lights in their yards, from dusk until
dawn on Oct. 29-31.  Business owners and church leaders are also encouraged to turn on
their exterior building lights.

PROVIDE LOGISTICAL SUPPORT: Volunteers perform specific duties ranging from
handling phone calls to staffing volunteer dispatch locations.

WATCH THEIR CHILDREN AND ENFORCE CURFEW: An emergency curfew is in
effect for juveniles under 18 years of age.  It is unlawful for juveniles under 18 to be on
city streets, unaccompanied by a parent or guardian, from 6 p.m. Oct. 30 to 6 a.m. Oct.
31.

THE CAN SHOW THEY CARE BY WEARING AN ORANGE RIBBON: Wearing an
orange ribbon serves as a powerful reminder of what neighborhoods can accomplish when
they stand together.
